BoF at Drupalcon - RDFa, Semantic Web and Distributed Social Networks

I am holding a BoF on RDFa, Semantic Web and Distributed Social Networks. It will be at Drupalcon SF on Monday the 19th of April at 11am, Room 200.

Here are some of the links that I talked about.

Giant Global Graph - "It's not the documents, it is the things they are about which are important". Obvious, really.

FOAF+SSL

FOAF+SSL is a secure authentication protocol that enables the building of distributed, open and secure social networks.

It uses the SSL layer built into virtually every standard Web browser. By placing a Web ID in an X509 certificate, the owner of the private key corresponding to the public key published in the cert, can be named by that Id. Because the Web ID is a URL, it can be linked to using LinkedData principles. This allows trust to be expressed through the position of that Web ID in the global linked data network.

WebID

A Web ID is an "Identifier" (an "HTTP URI" in fact), for Entity "You" of Type: Person, on the World Wide Web. It looks like a URL and feels like a URL, but isn't solely a URL, due to the inherent Identity/Access duality of HTTP scheme URIs. Thus, its Identity Function handles unique identification while its Access Function provides data access -- via a Web document URL -- to "Your" profile metadata (i.e., constellation of characteristics - attributes and values - that describe entity "You").

Create your own FOAF profile secure cert

Click register, enter in some details and then click the "create certificate request" button.

When you get yourself a WebId you automatically get an OpenId too that uses foaf+ssl authentication via http://openid4.me/ .

Online retail : How Best Buy is using Semantic Technology to define a new trend

  • GoodRelations + RDFa improved the rank of the respective pages in Google tremendously.
  • Jay also reported a 30 % percent (!) increase in traffic on the BestBuy stores pages, e.g. http://stores.bestbuy.com/1895
  • Yahoo observes a 15% increase in the Click-through-Rate (CTR). Nick Cox from Yahoo also recently reported that augmented search results, e.g. those with GoodRelations / RDFa in Yahoo get a 15 % higher Click-through-Rate (CTR)
